Description of School

The Edward Hines Jr. VA School of Nuclear Medicine Technology was founded in 1970. The program consists of a one year internship which emphasizes both didactic instruction and clinical training. A full range of scientific and medically related courses are taught including; patient care theory, nuclear physics/instrumentation, computer science, radiation safety and administrative principles. Clinical instruction is provided via rotations through two nuclear medicine departments in major Chicago medical centers. Experience is gained in adult/geriatric care at Hines VA,and in general/pediatric nuclear medicine practice at Loyola University Medical Center.

No stipend is provided. There is no tuition required.

Dates of Internships

Up to eight students are admitted during each 12 month period. Students begin their training starting the first week in July.  Graduation is in June upon completion of the 12 months of training. This also prepares students for the National Board Certification Examinations: (NMTCB) or the (ARRT(N)).

Applications should be submitted no later than March 1, for consideration for the July start date.  Factors in selection include academic record, letters of recommendation and a personal interview.

  • The following explains the requirements an applicant must meet to be considered for ADMISSION to the School of Nuclear Medicine Technology.  See School Brochure for complete information and requirements of the application process.

 

  1. Applicant must be at least 18 years old
  2. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States
  3. Applicant must submit official copies of high school or equivalent and college transcripts with completed application forms. These documents will be kept on file and used to notify prospective students.
  4. Applicant must have completed at least three years of academic study in the Basic Sciences at a college or university. A minimum of stated credits in the following subjects is recommended:
    • Biology 12 semester hours
    • Chemistry 12 semester hours
    • Mathematics 6 semester hours
    • Physics 6 semester hours

A major in one of the above is recommended

    • Applicants from a college or university affiliated with Hines Hospital may earn a Baccalaureate Degree on 3+1basis in Nuclear Medicine Technology.
    • Applicant must demonstrate academic evidence of having a grade average of C+ (2.5 out of 4.0) or higher for undergraduate courses taken.
    • Applicants may also be qualified if certified and accredited as:
      • Medical Technologist (MT-ASCP)
      • Radiologic Technologist (RT-ARRT)
      • Registered Nurse (RN)
      • Physicians Assistant

The above are presumed to have the necessary credentials to meet the entrance requirements.

  1. Applicant must submit three letters of recommendation from qualified persons familiar with applicants background (faculty member, an advisor, a dean, etc.).
  2. Applicant must participate in a personal interview with one or more members of the Admissions Committee.
  3. Applicant must submit evidence of good health.
